Global chip sales fell 2.4% month-on-month

January 3 news, according to foreign media reports, according to a report released by the Semiconductor Industry Association (Semiconductor Industry AssociatiON) on Monday, the global chip sales in November was 25.1 billion US dollars, down 2.4% from October. From 2011 to November, global chip sales increased by 0.8% over the same period of 2010.

The report shows that global chip sales were damaged in November last year due to the impact of the Thai flood and the euro zone sovereign debt crisis.

Last month, Intel lowered its sales forecast by US$1 billion because of fears that the flooding in Thailand will affect PC demand and thus the demand for its microprocessors. This flood has caused the PC and server industry to suffer the worst supply chain disruptions in decades.

Brian Toohey, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, said that this disruption in the supply chain is only a recent issue. He pointed out: "Supply chain disruptions from flooding in Thailand have impacted semiconductor sales in the near term, but OEMs (PC and other electronics manufacturers) are expected to recover lost production in the coming months."

Tuxi also pointed out: "The November sales were also affected by the sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone. This crisis is having a wide-ranging impact on other economies and global demand." The impact from the Eurozone is particularly evident. Semiconductor sales in the region fell 11.5% year-on-year.
