Analog Devices, Inc.'s newly introduced ADF4158PLL synthesizer can flexibly and cost-effectively implement FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar systems. FMCW radar systems are widely used in the automotive, aviation, military, industrial, and communications fields, and can measure the relative distance and speed of external targets. Compared with the traditional pulse radar method, the FMCW radar system can provide detection and ranging functions at a much lower power consumption level, and thus has a significant cost advantage.

FMCW radar systems require very high RF performance, and current methods that rely heavily on VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) linearity are very complex, lack flexibility, and costly, so there are many design challenges. As the latest member of the industry-leading PLL synthesizer series, the ADF4158 is a feature-rich 6.1GHz programmable device that can be easily configured to meet the needs of various FMCW radar system design engineers. The FMCW radar system implemented using the ADF4158 has a highly linear ramp characteristic that is completely independent of VCO linearity, thus improving radar resolution, reducing cost, and complexity related to system calibration.
