RF inductor selection

1. gist

Small RF inductors are used in mobile-based RF circuits, and small RE inductors can be divided into three types of inductors depending on the process.

The types of inductors are different and the characteristics are different. This time, the characteristics and selection points of the inductors will be introduced.

2. Types and characteristics of RF inductors

RF inductors can be divided into three types: winding, multilayer, and film according to different process methods.

The external photos are shown in Figure 1.

(winding type)

The wire is wound on a non-magnetic material to form a coil.

The winding type features high Q value, low DC resistance, high current, and large capacitance.

Among them, a particularly prominent feature is that the Q value (the value of the coil quality) is high, so it is widely used in circuits around the antenna.

(multi-layer type)

A coil model is formed by printing on a non-magnetic plate, and a plurality of non-magnetic plates are overlapped to form a coil. Due to its small size, high performance and high reliability, it is generally used in RF circuits.

(film type)

By forming a coil by the same process as a semiconductor such as an IC (Integrated Circuit) (a process method of sensitizing it by light), it has the characteristics of small size, high performance, low back-narrow value deviation, and narrow-value interval.

The type of coil is also used as an example of a multi-layer type.

3. RF inductance lineup

Figure 2 is a summary of the Murata RF Inductor Lineup.

Figure 2. Overview of the RF Inductor Lineup at Murata Manufacturing.

The smallest size in the winding type is 0.5mm x 0.4mm, which enables a small size.

The world's ultra-small 0.25mm x 0.125mm LQP01HQ series has been released in the film type, and products of other sizes and series have been continuously developed.

Since it is possible to unify large variations in Q values of different sizes and series, it is possible to select a suitable series according to the necessary Q characteristics.

The Q value comparison data of the LQP series is shown in Figure 3.

4. Conclusion

Small RF inductors are widely used in mobile-based RF circuits, so it is necessary to select the appropriate components based on the circuit and Q-value characteristics.

Murata has RF inductors with three different manufacturing processes: winding, multilayer, and thin film, so it can be used in a wide range of RF circuits.
