eBay Chief Product Architect: VR/AR is Key to eBay Transformation

eBay eBay occupies a dominant position in the early days of the Internet economy, linking buyers and sellers with its popular auction model. Now, eBay is trying to enhance its market competitiveness by expanding the product range of consumer online shopping through virtual reality and augmented reality technologies.

About 10 years ago, as the growth of the online auction industry slowed down, eBay's turnover began to decline, and Amazon stepped up its preemption of the non-auction sales market. In recent years, eBay has sought to attract sellers of special products that are not available on Amazon.com through more favorable conditions. Steve Yankovich, chief product architect at eBay, said that virtual reality and augmented reality are the keys to making this transition.

Through augmented reality technology, the user can see the computer-generated virtual content superimposed on the real scene after wearing the glasses. Yankovich said: "Imagine buying a pair of trousers on the Internet. You have a pair of augmented reality or mixed reality glasses. You stand in front of a mirror that you do every day and you can see the pants you wear. Look like."

Yankovich believes that with the wide use of augmented reality and virtual reality devices, it will enable companies like eBay to sell products such as furniture, and shoppers will rarely buy them online without seeing anything in kind. At the same time, it will also make many tedious shopping experiences more enjoyable, and it may make consumers willing to conduct more browsing online and generate more shopping impulses.

Like rival Amazon Amazon, eBay is also developing voice recognition technology, and Yankovich hopes to use it as the main method of interaction between shoppers and eBay. Based on speech recognition technology, eBay developed a product called "eBay Assistant", but Yankovich did not disclose the specific launch time.

Having said that “the future of retail is VR” is not just eBay, Wal-Mart has long expressed this. In addition, IKEA also leveraged on ARKit and launched its own AR application. In addition, our Taobao and Jingdong have followed the pace of technology and have launched various AR/VR functions on the APP.

It seems to be too early to say these things now. The popularity of virtual reality and augmented reality devices in the C-end market is far from what we expected. When one day, virtual reality, just like the Internet has just entered the millions of families, we will judge that the virtual reality is not too late in the retail industry. From another perspective, if AR shopping, AR retail can drive the popularity of AR/VR concepts in the C-end market, we are also happy to see. But the premise is that consumers can get real help from them and solve the pain points in shopping.
