Intel Officially Cancels Project Alloy One-Hour Plan

Due to a lack of interested partners, Intel is canceling plans to market the Project Alloy head as an open reference design.

Intel released Project Alloy (an x86-based VR all-in-one) in mid-2016. The tech giant said at that time that the product would be launched as an "open source reference design" in 2017 so that partners could build on Intel's projects. The product.

In January of this year, Intel indicated that the head will be listed in the Q4 quarter of 2017. Learned that Intel has decided to cancel this plan. The following is an official statement issued by Intel:

Intel has decided to phase out the Project Alloy reference design, but we will continue to invest in developing technologies that will support the next-generation AR/VR experience. This includes Movidius for the visual processing; Intel RealSense depth camera and six degrees of freedom solution and other related technologies such as Intel WiGig, Thunderbolt and Intel Optane. All of these Intel technology solutions are supported by a powerful combination of software features. In addition, from software design kits to reference designs, we are building a VR support ecosystem to stimulate innovation that enables rich immersive content. Project Alloy is an excellent proof of concept for Intel and the industry, showing the possibility of high performance, immersive and wireless VR experience. The knowledge we have learned through Project Alloy will help future efforts.

Intel stated that this decision was reached during the summer and stated that this was mainly due to the lack of partners who were interested in the show. The reasons for the current lack of interest in partners are not yet clear, but the potential may include: worry about the total cost of consumer devices is too high (after all, this is a full-featured integrated Windows PC), and further miniaturized the human body Engineering challenges and difficulties in improving endurance.

Another complication may be that some potential partners have already promised to adopt Microsoft's Windows VR reference design. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Acer and Asustek all plan to launch Windows VR heads-up in the Q4 quarter, which is the same as Project Alloy's original listing schedule.

Considering that Project Alloy's relatively mature design (even when it was released in 2016 was quite mature), Intel's cancellation of this project surprised us. At the beginning of this year, we even heard that Intel introduced the next iteration of the plan, including optimized processors, sensors, and fields of view.

Despite the cancellation of the Project Alloy project, Intel insisted that they will be fully involved in a series of VR and AR research and development fields, including the WiGig-based wireless VR system that is being developed in cooperation with HTC, and the recently demonstrated PC-to-mobile transmission system. In addition, Intel is also supporting VR content development and VR e-sports projects.
