Thought by the bat group: How to measure with a ultrasonic sensor in a washing machine?

There are a lot of attractions in Austin, Texas—music, technology, and food—there are countless. But for visitors who come here in the summer, one thing is definitely not to be missed. Every evening, more than 3 million bats fly out of a bridge in the city, fly over a small lake, eastward, and eat tons of mosquitoes and flying insects. It’s a rare opportunity to watch the bats that are pressing the black clouds and fly to the distance. Don’t miss it.

What happens to the washing machine like a bat? Use sound to provide the quality of our lives.

The ability of bats to prey on echolocation has always surprised me. Surprisingly, humans are just beginning to use very similar technologies to improve our lives. And this blog will show how we can use ultrasound sensing to better sense our world. Specifically, we will discuss the use of ultrasonic sensors in liquids to measure liquid level, density and composition.

Liquid type identification and level sensing have been used for decades in the technology world that is driving our world forward. Vehicles may be the first example presented in the mind, but other applications are too numerous to enumerate. Environmental testing equipment, mining applications, and extensive industrial processing depend on accurate measurements of liquid level, composition, and density to achieve the desired function.

Now, we can do this with just one transducer and several electronic components, and miniaturization is enabling new applications to adopt these technologies. For example, household appliances accurately measure the amount of water and chemical cleaners used to minimize the amount of waste generated. Printer manufacturers not only need to tell users when the ink is low, they also want to confirm that the user is using their factory ink.

For application developers, the good news is that Texas Instruments has introduced a successful device portfolio specifically for this application. The TDC1000 Ultrasound Analog Front End and the C2000 Real-Time Microcontroller (MCU) provide an excellent solution for level sensing and liquid type identification applications. In fact, the C2000 MCU is the only device in the industry that combines connectivity and the ability to provide picosecond accuracy in sound measurements—without the need for high power and cost-effective operation at GHz speeds. Picoseconds may sound a bit nitpicky and overly slick, but it is precisely because of the picosecond accuracy that the identification of problematic liquid densities can be achieved, not just the level of liquid level. These devices are also AEC-Q100 certified, so application developers with strict temperature and reliability requirements can confidently research and use these devices.
