World Bank launches African lighting program to promote lighting
The World Bank Group launched the African Lighting Programme on September 5, which aims to provide low-cost, safe, non-fossil fuel lighting products and related basic energy services to 250 million people in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to the World Bank, Africa's unpowered regions spend about $17 billion a year on lighting, and currently these regions use high-priced, inefficient, inferior lighting products that are prone to pollution and fire. Lighting expenditures often account for 10-15% of local household income.
Therefore, safe, reliable, high-quality, low-cost modern lighting products have potential huge “Africa Lighting Solutionsâ€, which are jointly managed by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. They will adopt a multi-pronged approach to solve both supply and demand. The limiting factors are used to promote the popularity of modern lighting in Africa.
