On the afternoon of May 28th, Beijing time, Sri Lankan telecom operators have been approved by the government, investing more than 200 million US dollars to expand the network and upgrade to 4G.

According to EconomyNext, the National Investment Commission of Sri Lanka approved more than $1.3 billion in investment proposals last month, including recommendations from Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and its subsidiary Mobitel.

Sri Lanka Telecom has been approved to invest $79 million to expand its network, including a national fiber backbone. Its wireless division, Mobitel, will also invest $80 million in LTE network upgrades.

In addition, Hutchison Telecommunica TIons Lanka has also been approved to invest $57 million for network expansion, and it is planning to merge with ETIsa Lanka.

The merger plan announced last month will give CK Hutchison a controlling stake in the new company.

The merger still requires competition and regulatory approval. If the transaction is over, Sri Lanka's mobile market will be reduced from five to four, and the combined new company will be in a better position to compete with market leaders Dialog Axiata and Mobitel.
