BASF and OSRAM develop white organic EL for lighting with 60 lm/W luminous efficiency

The German chemical company BASF and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH have developed a white organic EL for illumination with a luminous efficiency of up to 60 lm/W (in English). Although organic ELs with the same luminous efficiency have existed before, this product meets the color standard of the "Energy Star", an international standard for solid lighting fixtures. Companies such as BASF said that there has not been an organic EL for lighting that meets this standard.

This time, the stability of color temperature is improved by using a phosphorescent metal complex in the luminescent material. In the future, the life of the organic EL will be prolonged by improving the stability of the blue light-emitting material. "Developing a stable blue luminescent material that opens the way for organic EL lighting with a luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W or more" (BASF Future Business).

The development is based on the “OLEDs for Applications on the Lighting Market (OPAL)” project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and jointly developed by BASF and OSRAM Opto.
