The development of humanoid rescue robots will surpass Asimo

Honda exhibited a new prototype disaster relief robot called E2-DR at the International Intelligent Robotics and Systems Conference in Vancouver in 2017. He used the services of disaster relief measures that were insufficient in personnel during disasters or that humans could not do. Honda’s research on this robot was rarely disclosed, but the software shared the latest developments of the project.

Honda presented the latest prototype of the rescue robot E2-DR in this paper. The E2-DR is 1.68 meters high and weighs 85 kilograms, including a 1000 watt lithium-ion battery with a running time of 90 minutes; only 25 cm "thick", it can be squeezed through a 30 cm gap; a total of 33 degrees of freedom, including each 8 arms, 6 each, 2 torso, 1 at hand.

The E2-DR can rotate its torso 180 degrees and the hand can be gripped so that it can climb the stairs. Honda's design philosophy is that robots will work with wireless tools, so the dexterity of robot fingers is not the most important. In Honda's test, the robot was able to walk at 2 km/h, pass through a 200 mm pipe, take debris, walk through 26 mm/h of rain for 20 minutes, and climb a vertical ladder.

The E2-DR is equipped with two rotating Hokuyo laser rangefinders, a monocular camera with synchronized LED flash, an SR4000 time-of-flight camera and a stereo camera coupled to an infrared projector. There are also cameras and 3D sensors on each hand. This will enable the robot to make judgments and analysis of the environment and act completely autonomously.

The robot is dust and splash resistant and can operate between -10 and 40 °C. Honda has proposed an "isolated cooling structure" that removes heat from the body of the E2-DR.

Honda said on IROS that E2-DR is still only a prototype, and there is still a lot of work to be done before the robot really works. At present, Toyota's first priority is to let the E2-DR learn to deal with environmental issues such as collisions. Perhaps at IROS 2019, we will see that E2-DR performs the actual tasks.

Honda has many years of experience in the development of humanoid robots, and Asimo has been developing for more than 30 years. Asimo's positioning is family service, and Honda hopes that E2-DR will be even stronger.
