Why is Samsung arranging Micro-LED? Is it necessary to give up the OLED display?

Recently, it was reported that Samsung Electronics has invested about $150 million to acquire PlayNitride for the layout of Micro-LED. In this regard, Li Yunli, chairman of the company, said that Samsung did not acquire the company, but he did hear the rumors that Samsung intends to acquire the technology.

In fact, the reporter heard last year that some people from South Korea's OLED research institute revealed that Samsung is very interested in Micro-LED technology. They are entrusting them to look for startups with technical strength and hope to deploy Micro-LEDs through investment or acquisition of related entrepreneurial teams.

Samsung, which has a leading edge in LCD and OLED, why is it so interested in Micro-LED technology?

After Apple acquired LuxVue, the Micro-LED boom was gradually set off. This not only activated Sony, but also prompted Samsung to focus on Micro-LED technology.

As a pioneer in Micro-LED technology, Sony launched "Crystal LED Display" at the International Consumer Electronics Show in 2012. Last year, Sony also released the Crystal Series CLEDIS (Crystal LED Integrated Structure).

This year, Sony went one step further and presented a dazzling 4K Crystal LED display on CinemaCon, which is 16 feet. Sony used the display to play a clip of Billy Lynn's midfielder in 4K and 120 frames per second. Sony plans to showcase a new 32-foot product at the upcoming NAB Show.

Samsung is not willing to show weakness. At the end of March this year, a display screen dedicated to cinemas was released, called Cinema Screen. The display is a 34-foot LED panel with a resolution of 4096 & TImes; 2160 (4K). It also supports HDR content, which is said to be 10 times brighter than a standard cinema projector.

Yu Yi, director of the Basic Electronics Research Office of the CCID Electronic Information Industry Research Institute, pointed out that it is possible to realize large-area LED panels by splicing one LED or one thousand and one thousand LEDs at the same time. It is just costly. So Samsung and Sony did not apply large-area LED panels to the consumer market, but instead focused on the cinema screen market.

It can be seen that although Miro-LED is popular among large companies, there are still many challenges. Liu Zhaojun, an associate professor at the School of Electronics and Information Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University, believes that large-scale Miro-LED panels must achieve high-volume, high-precision, high-yield transfer if mass production is to be achieved.

Li Yunli, chairman of PlayNitride, also said that the large-area transfer technology of Miro-LED is an art. It is understood that PlayNitride has achieved a certain breakthrough in the transfer technology. The company's PixeLEDTM display technology is based on gallium nitride and transferred to the panel through transfer technology with a transfer yield of 99%.

The reason why Samsung wants to acquire PlayNitride is probably to get the company's transfer technology. Because if the breakthrough can be achieved in large-area transfer technology, the cost of large-size LED panels can be reduced, and it is expected to enter the consumer market. LED panels can be oversized by splicing, which is expected to fill Samsung's lack of oversized panel market.

Industrial research institute LEDinside research associate Yu Yu estimated that if Micro-LED completely replaces existing LCD components, including backlight modules, liquid crystals, polarizers, etc., the potential market size of Micro LED can reach 30 billion to 40 billion US dollars.

Indeed, Micro-LED combines low power consumption, high brightness, ultra-high resolution and color saturation, fast response, ultra-power saving, long life and high efficiency. Tu Menglong, director of R&D's R&D, pointed out that Micro-LED can achieve indoor screen brightness of 1000~2000nit, and LCD screen brightness can only reach several hundred nit. In addition, Micro-LED can use three primary colors or four primary colors, and the color area is wider and the display effect is better.

Why is Samsung arranging Micro-LED? Is it necessary to give up the OLED display?

At present, in addition to the layout of Micro-LED by Apple and Sony, other technology companies are also very interested in Micro-LED. Facebook's Oculus acquired InfiniLED, and Ostendo Technologies and KDX (Kangdexin) also signed a partnership agreement.

At present, Micro-LED can form two major application directions, one is the wearable market represented by Apple, and the other is the oversized TV market represented by Sony. Micro-LEDs are very challenging in terms of large size. For many years, LEDs have not taken advantage of cost compared to LCDs and OLEDs. According to LEDinside statistics, the manufacturing cost of Micro LED display technology is still 3-4 times that of existing display products, so manufacturers are reducing costs by increasing product added value, improving chips, and transferring technology yield.

The future of Micro-LED is very broad, not only in micro-projection, VR products, but also in mobile phones, TVs, watches and other markets. Samsung currently has a leading position in the LCD and OLED markets. Samsung should pay attention to the Micro-LED technology that may pose challenges to LCD and OLED. Especially in the case that competitor Apple has already taken the shot, Samsung should be strategically layout.

Capsule Slip Ring

What is a Capsule Slip Ring?

Capsule slip rings are a type of electrical connector that are used to transfer power and data between two rotating objects. They are commonly used in applications where there is a need to send or receive signals from a stationary object to a rotating one, or vice versa.

How Does it Work?

Capsule slip rings work by using a series of electrical contacts that rotate with the object on which they are mounted. These contacts are spaced evenly around the circumference of the ring, and as they rotate they make and break contact with corresponding contacts on the other object. This allows power and data to be transferred between the two objects without any interruption.

Advantages of Capsule Slip Rings

There are several advantages to using capsule slip rings in place of other types of electrical connectors.

For example, the rotation of the contacts causes them to be freely accessible and therefore free from dust and debris. This makes them ideal for applications where connector maintenance is often a problem.

Because the contacts are freely accessible, they can be readily replaced if a fault occurs. They also have very low electrical resistance, making them ideal for transmitting radio frequency signals. Because of the low resistance, this type of connector is often used in high-speed data transmissions.

This type of Conductive Slip Ring is similar to the shape of a hat. The brim part is a flange with a conductive slip ring. The function of the flange is to facilitate installation. It is connected to electrical equipment through the fixing hole of the flange. It can be firmly installed on the equipment. Therefore, the stator of the cap-type slip ring is generally fixed by the outer layer with a flange, and the inner part is the rotor with the inner shaft rotating. The stator and the rotor are not fixed, and the details will be different according to the installation method.
