Fingerprint recognition has become one of the most common features of smartphones. Mobile phone unlocking, secure payment, sleep wake-up, one-finger application and other functions make people more and more inseparable from fingerprint recognition.

According to statistics, shipments of fingerprint recognition sensors in 2016 reached 689 million, compared with 23 million in 2013, and CAGR reached 210%. Research firm Yole predicts that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the fingerprint identification market will reach 19% in the next five years, and the market size is expected to increase from $2.8 billion in 2016 to $4.7 billion in 2022.

From a technical perspective:

There are currently three main technologies for fingerprint recognition: capacitive, optical and ultrasonic.

At present, the most mature fingerprint phones on the market are basically capacitive. The bio-radio principle used by Apple is similar to the principle of capacitive. Xiaomi uses a few high-quality ultrasonic fingerprint recognition chips that have been mass-produced.

Capacitive / RF type:

Capacitive fingerprint module uses the fingerprint sensor to form an electric field with the conductive subcutaneous electrolyte. The fluctuation of the fingerprint will cause different changes in the pressure difference between the two, thereby achieving accurate fingerprint measurement. This method has strong adaptability and no special requirements for the use environment. At the same time, the space occupied by silicon crystal elements and related sensing elements is within the acceptable range of mobile phone design, which makes the technology better promoted on the mobile phone side. .

Apple:

Apple acquired AuthenTec for $356 million in July 2012, and in June 2015 purchased a large number of patents related to fingerprint recognition and touch screen technology from the closed biometric security company Rapidis, making Apple in terms of fingerprints. Has a very strong technical patent and technical capabilities. Apple's fingerprint identification chip is completed by TSMC. Taiwan's fine materials and crystal technology complete wafer-level packaging. ASE is responsible for subsequent packaging and testing and SiP module production.

FPC:

Thanks to AuthenTec's offering of products and technology to Apple alone, FPC has become the leader of fingerprint identification chips in the non-Apple mobile phone camp. The first domestic mobile phone with fingerprint recognition Konka K5 is the fingerprint chip using FPC. In 2014, Huawei Mate 7 also adopted FPC fingerprint chip. Subsequently, more and more brand customers in China began to adopt FPC fingerprint chips. But with the rise of domestic Goodix, Silead other domestic fingerprint identification company, began in 2017 before losing to FPC on the Huawei P10 Goodix, then lost Silead on Mate 10, only to become Second Source of these two projects, The days have become less than good. This year, FPC also began to regain the market through low prices.

Goodix:

Founded in 2002, it entered the touch field in 2006. Although experienced the 2014 Meizu MX4 Pro performance storm, but the big brand mobile phone manufacturers do not want to see the FPC one big, so Goodix began to get the domestic Huawei, OPPO, vivo, LeTV, ZTE, Xiaomi and many other companies last year. Recognition. With years of technology accumulation and knowing the Chinese market, Goodix is ​​likely to pick up FPC this year and become the new leader of fingerprint recognition chips in the Android mobile phone market.

Silead:

The earliest touch screen chip has a high market share on the flat touch screen chip. In 2014, the development of fingerprint chips began. Since it entered the field of fingerprint chips earlier and gained a lot of technology accumulation, it was adopted by Huawei's various models this year. In 2017, there will be an opportunity to ship more than 10M per month.

Aegis:

Established in 2007, focusing on the development and sales of passive capacitive fingerprinting chips. Because the algorithm is very good, its algorithm has been adopted by Samsung mobile phones very early. At present, Samsung's low-end mobile phones are also beginning to use Aegis' fingerprint chips. However, because the domestic market is not doing well enough, the voice of Aegis is rarely heard in China.

SynapTIcs:

Established in 1986. In October 2013, SynapTIcs acquired Validity for $255 million. The main customers are Samsung, hTC and ASUS. However, there are basically no companies in the country that use their fingerprint chips. Recently, SynapTIcs announced that it has invested in Shanghai Luoyi Technology Co., Ltd. and reached an exclusive partnership to enter the field of optical fingerprinting.

Mindray:

I have my own unique insights in the design and production of fingerprint chips, but the main customers are small companies that do PCBA, and have not become brand customers.

Chipone:

With the cooperation with Lianxin, there is a certain share in some brand customers. However, its brand awareness has not been established.

Focal Duntai:

At the end of 2014, Duntai launched the fingerprint chip, but after that, Duntai’s fingerprint business almost fell into stagnation. At present, the shipment of Duntai fingerprint chips is very small. The main reason is that most of the backbone of the original fingerprint identification technology team left. Some people followed Mo Lianghua (Dong Taiyuan, deputy general) to set up Xinyi Technology, and another group set up the core Qihang, both companies are positioned in the field of fingerprint identification.

Letterhead:

The former company established by Duntai Mo Lianghua has a good technical strength. However, due to the past and unclear old-fashioned Dongtai, whether the follow-up development will have an impact is still unknown.

Feinger:

Hua Hong Group is the major shareholder of Fei Engel. At present, all of Fingerling's fingerprint chip products are produced by Hua Hong Group's own Foundry factory Hua Hong Hong Li, which makes the Fei Engel fingerprint identification chip have good guarantee in quality and capacity. However, due to the late entry into this market, it can only be occupied by price wars.

BOE:

BOE's fingerprint chip began mass production this year. Since there has not been a large-scale promotion, there are not many people who know it. BOE replaces the traditional silicon process with the TFT process technology that is good at home, and then adds a simple conversion chip COB to the glass to realize the fingerprint function. This reduces the consumption of fingerprints on the crystal chips, and avoids the criticism of the Camera Sensor line when the fingerprints are mass-produced. After all, BOE has ample TFT production lines, and this can also make the fingerprint chip thinner. In this way, BOE is more lethal in the case of the same performance as mainstream products.
